Decompression Sickness
Decompression sickness (DCS) is the release of gas bubbles into the blood caused by a sudden decrease in pressure around the body. Commonly called the bends, and sometimes diver’s disease, DCS is most commonly found in scuba divers. Nitrogen bubbles form in the organs and tissues during a long or deep dive causing nitrogen bubbles to enter the bloodstream when a diver ascends too rapidly. Flying in an unpressurized airplane may also cause DCS.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy is the primary treatment for decompression sickness.
How you will benefit from HBOT
- Increased atmospheric pressure reduces the size of nitrogen bubbles and helps them dissolve into the bloodstream
Did You Know?
Decompression sickness was one of the first conditions treated with HBOT.
Our experienced clinical team is available to help you identify appropriate candidates for Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy and to answer any additional questions about HBOT or our facilities. You deserve the best – our mission is to achieve patient success through personalized, innovative, and compassionate care that enhances your healing potential. We do so at the lowest possible out-of-pocket cost for your patients, with only one copay and/or less coinsurance than at a hospital-based HBOT program.
