The Difference Between Covered and Non-Covered Conditions

Written by Hyperbaric Medical Solutions | 12/09/16

You may be wondering about the conditions we've seen at Hyperbaric Medical Solutions (HMS).

You’ll typically see them grouped into two categories: Covered and Non-Covered.

So what exactly does that difference mean? Let us explain:

Covered Conditions:

Basically, Covered conditions are those that the FDA has approved for treatment so they'll likely be covered by Medicare and other commercial insurance companies.

HMS Covered conditions are as follows:

Air or Gas Embolism

Carbon Monoxide Poisoning or Smoke Inhalation

Central Retinal Artery Occlusion

Chronic Refractory Osteomyelitis

Crush Injury, Compartment Syndrome and Other Acute Traumatic Ischemias

Decompression Sickness

Diabetic Lower Extremity Wounds

Failed Skin Grafts and Flaps

Gas Gangrene

Necrotizing Soft Tissue Infections

Non-Healing Wounds

Radiation Tissue Damage

Severe Anemia

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss Treatment

Thermal Burns

Non-Covered Conditions:

Non-Covered refers to those conditions that the FDA has not yet approved for a certain treatment, although the conditions may have been studied and documented by research; and studies may be ongoing. In many cases, their treatment may be approved by regulatory bodies in other countries. In general, Non-Covered conditions in the U.S. are not covered by insurance. The conditions seen at HMS that are currently considered Non-Covered are only those with documented efficacy and it is explained to each of these patients that treatment for their particular condition is not yet recognized by the FDA.

HMS Non-Covered Conditions are as follows:

Anoxic Brain Injury

Cancer (Treatment Synergy)

Cerebral Palsy
