15 Years Strong: How HMS Has Grown — and Why It Matters

Written by Hyperbaric Medical Solutions | 6/16/26

Fifteen years ago this month, Hyperbaric Medical Solutions opened its doors in Medford, NY with four chambers, a physician-led clinical team, and a conviction that hyperbaric oxygen therapy could do far more for patients if it were simply made more accessible.

At the time, meaningful access to Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) outside of a hospital setting was rare. Hospital-based programs were expensive, often inaccessible, and focused narrowly on a handful of indications. The idea that a freestanding, physician-led clinic could deliver the same standard of care — and reach patients who otherwise had nowhere to turn — was a bold vision of what the future of the field.

Fifteen years later, that vision is a reality.

By the Numbers

Since that first patient in June 2011, Hyperbaric Medical Solutions has grown into one of the most established independent hyperbaric practices in the country:

  • 12,000+ consultations
  • 7,000+ patients treated
  • 130,000+ HBOT sessions performed

Today, HMS operates across five locations — Manhattan, NY; Woodbury, NY (Long Island); Miami, FL; Fort Lauderdale, FL; and Randolph, MA (Boston) — with an experienced clinical team that has grown significantly to meet increasing patient demand.

The Patients We Serve

The breadth of patients HMS has cared for reflects both the versatility of hyperbaric oxygen therapy and the evolving landscape of what patients need. Since 2021 alone, the clinical picture spans:

Our clinical foundation supports patients that come to us with conditions where HBOT has been part of standard care for decades — radiation tissue injury, non-healing wounds, diabetic foot ulcers — though too often overlooked and underutilized. Alongside that core, our practice has grown substantially in post-surgical recovery, sudden sensorineural hearing loss, Long COVID, health and performance optimization, and others — indications where the evidence base has matured and patient demand has grown significantly.

Many of the people who find their way to HMS do so after being told there's nothing left to try. For them, finding HBOT is a turning point in their health journey.

A Field That Has Come Into Focus

When HMS opened in 2011, hyperbaric oxygen therapy was largely invisible outside of hospital wound care programs. The idea of using HBOT to optimize surgical outcomes, support neurological recovery, address post-viral fatigue, or enhance longevity wasn't part of any mainstream healthcare conversation.

That has changed — noticeably, and in recent years, quite rapidly.

The clinical and wellness communities are paying serious attention to what oxygen under pressure can do. The research base has expanded. The patient population has broadened. And the providers entering this space have grown in number and in ambition.

For HMS, this evolution is not a challenge — it's a validation of what we have been doing for fifteen years. The therapy we built our practice around, with physician oversight, individualized protocols, and a standard of care we developed from the ground up, is the therapy the healthcare world is now taking seriously.

What that means for patients is that finding the right provider — one with the clinical depth, the track record, and the commitment to safe, effective care — matters more than ever.

What Makes HMS Different

We are a physician-led, freestanding hyperbaric practice. That distinction matters more than it might seem.

Every patient who walks through our doors is evaluated by a physician. Every treatment is delivered in a hard-shell, medical-grade hyperbaric chamber, pressurized to clinical standards. Every protocol is grounded in evidence — the same evidence base that our own clinical team has contributed to, through published research on sudden sensorineural hearing loss, long COVID, and other emerging indications. Dr. Alan Katz, our National Medical Director, currently chairs the UHMS Committee on Office-Based Hyperbaric Medicine, the national body that sets the standards for practices like ours.

We are not a wellness spa. We are not a hospital. We are something that didn't really exist when we started — a freestanding medical practice built entirely around delivering hyperbaric oxygen therapy at the highest standard and with genuine care for every patient we see.

What Comes Next

HMS at fifteen is not a practice standing still. Our clinical capabilities continue to expand, new locations are in development, and the field is maturing in ways that create real opportunity for an organization with our history and our standards.

But the work remains what it has always been: a freestanding, physician-led practice doing serious hyperbaric medicine — for patients who deserve nothing less.
